Since my last post about Automatic Node References, I've found and started using the Node Picker module.
It doesn't give me the exact features I was looking for, but it's a step in the right direction. It adds a button onto the WYSIWYG editor installed on my site (in this case, TinyMCE) which gives me a jQuery pop-up box listing all my internal content. There is also a filter option which can be used to filter by node title or content type.
I'll keep searching for an automatic solution, and will post the results on this site.
